Subject: [*] bolo-random-map-generator.hqx
Hi All,
There are lots of Bolo editors around these days, but I haven't seen a
random map generator yet, so here's my first attempt at it. Its a bit weak
at the moment, but we played one map, and the major complaint was the map
was too big (100*100 is too big for 5 or 6 people) (40*40 is way too small
for 16 pillboxes, that was my first map :-).
It currently produces maps with only grass and forrest. I've got no good
ideas for placing roads, rivers, or buildings, so I ignored them for now.
You feed it numbers for rows, cols, %land, %forest, #bases, #pillboxes, and
the starting armour, shells and mines for the pillboxes (all settings have
a pair of values, and it will choose between them at random, or pick a
reasonable value if you don't give it any help).
BTW, one thing that I think might improve the start of the game is to have
all bases start off empty. This negates (to a degree) the tactic of
running around grabbing them all, since others can just put a few shots
into them to take them back. It also slows down the start of the game
which tends to make for a more even game. It'd be better if Bolo didn't
increase the contents of bases until they were initially taken, otherwise
they tend to grow while you are waiting to get everyone connected (the game
start delay is nice, but it usually takes us a long time to get everyone
connected at the same time).
Please, please, please let me know how you think the map's could be
improved (preferably with ideas on HOW it can be done, but any ideas would
be good).
Enjoy,
Peter - yet another Bolo enthusiast :-)

Subject: [*] finder-to-front.hqx
This is Finder-To-Front a small application that when run will
put the Finder in the foreground and then quit. It is meant to
be put into the Startup folder if you have System 7. Starting
with a tilde (~) its file name will make sure that it is the
last item to be run in the Startup folder. That way you can au-
tomatically launch a lot of applications, accessories etc. on
startup and end up with the Finder in the foreground so you can
commence work.
Since this was not present in the archives anymore I thought I'd
repost it.

Hi,
I'd like to replace FindIt1.1.0 with this new version. Version
1.1.1 of FindIt no longer has a bug in which older macs running system 7
would bomb while the program was starting up.
FindIt still searches the text files in a folder full of files for
a text string you specify. FindIt supports case insensitive searches and
recursive folder searches.

Not Another File Filter - a comms/multi-OS environment utility.
***********************
NAFF is a no-frills, quick-and-dirty utility for converting between Mac,
Dos and Unix text file formats. Just drag the file(s) you wish to convert
over the NAFF icon, select the conversion required and the characters to
be added to construct the output file name(s) and let it go....
NAFF runs in the background under System 7 (which it requires), but in
any case is reasonably fast, so it should not often need to be
backgrounded, unless you have very large, or very many files to convert.
Double-clicking the NAFF icon will present an input file selection box
immediately for conversion of a single file.
Output files are in MacWrite text file format, still the lowest common
denominator format and readable by any text editor/word processor.
This program is free. Distribute it as you like, but only with this
documentation.
Future enhancements
------------------
NAFF does not accept whole folders in 'drag & drop' mode yet - this may
be a useful improvement. I might add a few options (setting file
type and creator, default conversion etc.). More than this would be
against the original idea of a simple tool which "does nothing very much,
but does it very well".
Bugs and suggestions to me please:

Subject: [*] text-merge-2.hqx
Text-Merge2 or "Cat!" is an updated version of the original text-
merge program used for finding and combining text files. Like the
original program, this program allows users to specify the folder to
be searched and accepts a search string of characters which can
include the wild-card "?" character. Files with names containing the
search string (start, end, or anywhere can be specified) are copied to
an output file in the designated folder. In addition,
1) The program is now modeless, allowing other programs to run
simultaneously.
2) The program now includes a multi-folder search option which
when selected causes the program to search both the designated
folder as well as any folders contained within this folder.
Registered users recieve the latest version of the program and
"Creator" a utility program that allows users to change the creator
type of specified text documents, thus
allowing multiple TEXT formatted documents to be automatically
loaded into any desired application. Has been run on systems 6.0.5 or
later on Classic, LC, IIsi, IIcx. Must be unstuffed with Stuffit.

Sure that both RETROSPECT (from Dantz Development) and FASTBACK (from

Subject: Beware MacInTax, get the updates (Comment)
I've been more than a little upset at the makers of MacInTax
myself, both last year and this. There's a little crashing problem
in version 10.01 (what I have). Giving MacInTax more RAM helps, but
call ChipSoft for the free update, just the same.
If you plan to import tax information from Quicken 3.0 to
MacInTax, I just discovered you need Quicken 3.0 release 6 or greater
(currently they're at release 9). You can determine your release number
by typing option-r while the "About Quicken" box is open. The bug is
an incompatible change in MacinTax's file format (the STD template).
Intuit are being good sports about it, call them for a free update.
The lesson here is that if you wait till the last minute and expect
your tax software to pull you through in the clutch, don't count on it.

Being a student, I am interested in the SVGA option because
of it's potential of being *cheaper* and the hope of 800x600 resolution
in 16 bit color. However, various mac publications have ominously
warned that not all Super VGA monitors will work with a Centris.
Can anyone recommend a good (cheap) SVGA monitor that will

better, explain the characteristics that identify a Super VGA monitor
as being one that will *work*.

Subject: Disk Cache in Mac OS
It may be another FAQ, but I guess someone else will also be interested.
Is the disk cache in Mac OS a read-only cache? ( ie. Only cache the read
command, but wait until the write is complete. )
Also, it there any difference between write-back cache and write-through
cache?
Or there're other model of disk cache?
Part of the reason I ask was in Microsoft Window, it has read cache and write
cache, and the 68040 has a write-back cache, which improve its speed
dramatically. I also notice that the disk cache in a PC is much faster than a
Mac. ( Well, I'm comparing a 486DX-33 with a vintage Mac IIx, which is not
really fair. ) Just wondering how efficient/effective the Mac OS disk-cache
is, and if it is not efficient, is there any better alternatives.
Finally, how does the cache on the disk controller affects performance? Say
the disk has its own 128k cache, will a larger Mac OS cache help?
Thanks.

During my latest foray into Info-Macland, I came across & downloaded the
Ghostscript 2.5.2b1 distribution; a fine piece of software, no doubts.
However, when I've used it on a PowerBook 180 w/System 7.1, I've run
across some troublesome snags. The first few id 28 failures were due to
lack of memory, promptly solved with more virtual memory. However, after
downloading the Laserprep, if I open any Postscript doc and have it
displayed onscreen, any attempt to use the menus will result in a
totally hung machine, needing a hard reset. I've experimented with
fooling around with the scrollbars and calling menu commands via
shortcut keys, which work fine. Funny thing, after doing that, the menus
then work fine too.
Are these Known Bugs, or is my machine/configuration to blame ?

increase the bit depth of the monitor. We have a standard Apple 14" monitor. I
called the

VRAM. I asked
him whether he thought that was strange or not and if the VRAM was
functioning. He told me
he checked with someone who told him the VRAM was to speed up video intensive

Quicktime movies. I told him that I was sure that wasn't the case; that the
VRAM was to
increase screen colors.
Do we need to add additional VRAM? The Quadra 700 has 8 VRAM SIMM slots of

filled only 2. What is the achievable screen depth for different size monitors
based on
the amount of VRAM added?

Subject: MacInTax problems, part 2 (much beter, this time!)
part 2 of my installation saga...
If you read my message yesterday, you know of my difficulty
encountered
while trying to install MacInTax on my two drive system. After I vented my
spleen to the net, I managed to get a phone call through to ChipSoft. A
helpful person named Paul told me that they were "forced" to use the Apple
Installer, and that is what may have led to my problems. MacInTax wants to
install its own fonts in your system and the installer apparently can't look
for it on any other disks.
I have a nifty utility called "SystemSwitcher," so I copied my boot
system and finder over to my second drive, removed all the fonts and sounds
and
used SystemSwitcher to bless it. I could now boot a completely clean and
minimal system, so I went through the installation process again, starting
with
the HeadStart stuff and then the v10.01 update.
The HeadStart installed without a glitch, but v10.01 still got hung up
looking for a disk but not recognizing it, then loosing track of a convertor
segment. (Refer to yesterday's message for more detail on this.) I did again
what had worked before and this time the installation completed without
freezing or giving me a scary alert. :-)
I now had 21 new fonts in my formerly clear external system folder, so
I removed the ones with the same name from my original, internal system, saved
those in another folder so I can put them back later, and copied the MacInTax
fonts from my new system folder into my original. (Paul at ChipSoft had
mentioned a potential font conflict, which is why I went through so much
trouble to replace the fonts manually.) I then re-blessed my original system
and now everything seems to work ok.
I still haven't tried printing with it, so I don't know if I have a
font conflict or not. Saw a message yesterday regarding poor printing on an
IM,
which is what I have, so I'm just a bit worried. I'll know tonight if all is
finally well.
BTW, Paul at ChipSoft was very pleasant on the phone and even offered
to look up my order for the state forms. He seemed fairly knowledegable about
Macs, so overall I'm happy for now. Consider this note to be a small amount
of
water thrown on yesterday's flame.
If all this trouble is really due to Apple's Installer program, it
seems that someone over there ought to look into it. It's not fair to s/w
vendors if their stuff looks bad due to an Apple problem.

It's true that the Mac Plus is slow, but not only because its limitation
on memory. You can't increase a Plus to more than 4MB RAM; however you
could put in an accelerator upgrade (like Novy's) with a 68030 processor
which replaces the old 68000 and then you can add up to 16 MB RAM.
However, such upgrades are not cheap and you might be better off to sell

However, when they got the Quadras, the workstations' system manager

Here are two suggestions to try for making squares in Microsoft Word
without relying on fonts:
1) The Insert Graphics command
appear at the cursor (make sure Show Paragraphs is on). Select the graphic
and choose Outline from the font menu. Then click once on the graphic and
size the box by dragging the corner handle. The box can be used in a
formula or a paragraph.
2) The Formula construction
Using Word's mathematics typesetting tools (with Show Paragraphs on), just
type the formula character (command-option-backslash) followed by X( )
with two or three spaces between the parentheses. Your screen should show
.\X( )
Now turn Show Paragraphs off (by choosing Hide Paragraphs). You may get a
rectangle instead of a square, but tweak the number of spaces inside the
parentheses until you like the result. Even better, use command-spaces in
the parens to make sure the spaces stay a fixed size.
Either of these squares could be stored in the glossary for quick access.

I colleage wishes to make a composite photgraphic image from a series of
still images caputed from a Video, ie overlay a series of still images to
make a large mosaic. These will be mosaics of the seafloor bottom captured
by alvin, so a mosaicing of the video frames is really the only way to
generate large images. She has already done this using the campus video
facility, and photoshop. I think that it can be semi-automated. See below
for details.
We are also looking for input on what hardware to purchase to capture
frames. She wants the highest quality possible. Which video boards are
reccomended? On the video tape side, what machines are reccommended. The
options are betacam 1/2 inch, S-Vhs,or Hi8. She leans towards Hi8, because
she already has a Hi8 video camcorder.
Proccedure:
o Capture video frames to pict images.
o Import frame into photoshop.
o paste frame into a layer
o rotate and resize each frame using transparency options.
o Transfer to base layer.
I think that the processing of the images could be automated using some
image processing techniques i.e. select three points, calculate the
rotation and size needed, and store in a file. Batch process images after
you are done with the sequence.
Questions:
Has anybody every done this type of compositing before?
Is there an image processing program with layers and transparency options,
and a scripting language?
Does the latest version of photoshop handle apple events?
Could an apple event aware program like Spyglass transform handle this?
What are the reccomended hardware options for video capture?

Both the PB 160 and the PB 180 can output color from its video port.
HOWEVER, it is limited to 8 bit color which limits you to 256 (2^8)
colors. Many of the overhead LCD color projection panels have the

from top choice down. I suspect that the educational pricing is
considerably less then the list price, however, I have not yet
obtained that info. My recommendation is the Ovation because:
capable of displaying live video without an addin computer video
board or external adapter box; it supports connection of optional
powered speakers; hand held remote control unit; works with Mac or
PC platform; supports NTSC and PAL based VCR's video disc and TV;
capable of 24,389 colors; can have all 4 inputs filled and the LCD
can automatically detect signal type.

Ovation - Proxima Corp. - (619) 457-5500

With the marvelous Speedometer tests that have been occuring
lately, I wondering if someone could test a Mac LC020 that has been
accelerated and compared against a Mac LCIII. Either both should have or
both should not have an FPU.
The test would be helpful if window scrolls were done at 16bit
color on identical monitors. A good test would be to log on with an
identical terminal program on a net service of sorts with a 14400 baud
modem at 16bit color and observe how fast the screen scrolls as the net's
info scrolls (16bit color scrolls of text vs. 1 bit color scrolls is much
much slower).
I think the point is to see if it would really be an advantage if
an LCIII upgrade is done, rather than a 33 mhz accelerator. Assume that a
a pds slot expansion box would be used. Also, assume that ten megs is
plenty memory.
With these parameters, would an LCIII upgrade offer advantages
over an accelerated LC020?
Many thanks!!!

I have the Supra FAX Modem 14400 v.32bis and use it almost daily
with Fax STF software. I have yet to experience difficulty with sends or
receives. Typical "standard" numbers that I learned to receive on were the
Apple 800 number customer support line which has fax tech sheets for
products and MacWareHouse's fax number.
I live in a rural area where one could assume that phone lines
would be "dirty". Equipment here is a Mac LC 020, no acceleration (obviously
no virtual), with the modem using the modem port and a HP DeskJet printer
connected to the printer port, and on.
I am using System 7.0.1 with the latest release of TuneUp.
I'd suggest checking:
1) your computer to modem cable (hardware handshake cable?)
2) phone line quality
3) phone connector quality
4) try this with a friend's Supra modem for a few sessions
Don't fault the modem unless you can better isolate things. It
works fantastic for me on this LC 020.

There's at least one. I've had very good success with my modem sending to and
receiving from FAX machines/modems all over the U.S, at least. I haven't tried
anywhere overseas yet.
> I think MacUser did us all a great disservice by publishing a review
extolling this modem. As far as I can see, it does not perform as
advertised.
I disagree, and so do a lot of other Supra modem owners. Yes, there are a lot
of problems with different modems; I'm finding that a lot of them have to do
with the phone lines the modems are connected to. One user I support has
recently discovered that the long-distance service his site uses connected
their lines at 30 KHz instead of 60 KHz, so he can't go over 14.4 most of the
time. When my site's long-distance service changed, I couldn't connect to
anything at any speed, nor could a coworker with a Hayes SmartModem 9600, or
our Help Desk's Hayes SmartModem 2400! Another coworker, also with the Hayes
2400, had no trouble.
Our phone techs tested it the way they know how -- they listened to make sure
there was "tone" on the line that "sounded clean." That's not good enough for
high-speed data, though. We finally convinced them to move our lines to a
different line frame, with better A-D/D-A converters, and things cleared up
immediately.
When I had trouble connecting from home, I checked under my house and found
that instead of using good station wire to connect the phone jacks to the
junction box, the cheapos who built the place used standard line cord, which
is
inferior.
If you have any way of improving your phone line, or any way of griping at the
phone company, or on-site phone techs, do that. It can't hurt.

Hi Peter,
I read your note on sumex-aim.stanford.edu today. I would have replied
to your note via the board, but I do not know how to extract your
message and paste it into a posting. Sorry. Feel free to post my
comments below to the board if you think they might help other Supra
users.
I own five Supra FaxModem V.32bis devices. Four are used on Macs, while
one is used with an IBM PC-compatible. I have trouble with all of them!
To be clear, all of the modems use Supra's latest ROMs (i.e., version
"H" without CALLER ID and version "J" with CALLER ID). On the Macs,
I use FaxSTF software (version 2.2.3). On the PC, I use WinFAX (version ??).
The problems that I experience are quite simple. The Supra modems rarely
connect in fax mode to another Supra V.32bis modem. They do connect to
other brands of fax machines. Moreover, in data mode using Apple Remote
Access (version 1.0), two Supra V.32bis modems only connect at 2400 BAUD.
My problem is not unique. If you read Supra's Tech Support board, you will
find at least 100 messages complaining about this type of problem. Supra's
moderator has his hands full! Unfortunately, Supra's only response to date
has been to blame the problem on poor telephone lines (i.e., too much
noise, low speed rating). Supra is maintaining this position despite
numerous user reports that other brands on FaxModems work just fine over
the same hardware and software configurations.
I have wasted at least 40 hours trying to debug this problem. I have not
succeeded. I have spent at least $50.00 talking with technical support
at Supra as well as STF Technologies. They have not succeeded in solving
the problem. I guess that I also have wasted about $1,745 buying the
five Supra FaxModems. They simply do not work as advertised!
There is one ray of hope here. The last time I logged into Supra's BBS,
the moderator mentioned that Supra is working on a new ROM set. Although
Supra still has not acknowledged the problem, they appear to be working
on a "user configurable" parameter that adjusts the modem's sensitivity
to telephone line noise. I have no knowledge that this adjustment will
fix the problem.
I am very unhappy with the Supra FaxModem V.32bis product. In fact, I
am angry that Supra does not admit to the problem. I would like to
organize (or participate in) a letter writing campaign to Supra's
President and Board of Directors. Given the massive sales of this
product, there must be thousands of unhappy users who are willing
to write a letter of complaint.
Please keep me informed on your thoughts in this matter.
Good luck,

"starving artists" deduction this year. Would the program be likely to
handle this? thanks for any help!

Subject: Tektronix Patent - Request for Info
I remember that I read an article about an adventure game that used a
laserdisk to play video scenes while I was at university. This must have been
between 1976 and 1983, probably between 1979 and 1981.
In article appeared in BYTE or in Creative Computing.
The adventure game was written in BASIC, ran on an IBM-PC or on an Apple-II
(I'm not sure about which one) and controlled a laserdisk with the
movie 'Rollercoaster', in order to play the appropriate scenes depending
on what was going on in the adventure game.
I think the magazine contained two articles about this adventure: one
explaining how to play, the other explaining the techniques (I think this
one was called 'the rollercoaster game dissected').
Hope this helps.

Subject: Thoughts on the Centris
Hi Mac people,
I thought that perhaps I was lucky enough to somehow get a Centris 610
just as they were released, so that I could give you my thoughts.
I love it. The machine is FAST, very very FAST. It just does things.
What more discussion is needed, really? We've already talked about the
FPU to death, we know that we can't really afford a Quadra, or else we
would have one, that is why we went to the Centris. Let's admit it now!
So the Centris, is a poor man's Quadra (if there is such a thing) Someone
mentioned the horrors of the hardware on/off switch, but it's right at the
front, so what's the big deal about that?
I'm very familiar with IIci speeds, and I can tell you that I would't
touch anything like II line macs, after tasting this Centris. It really
is nice.
Nothing I've used has crashed so far, and I've tested a wide variety of
software. So I think that it's pretty safe, especially considering that
Cache switch in the control panel, which can turn off the weird way that
the 040 handles the cache. (I don't understand it, so don't ask me about
that) Anyway, I've never needed to turn it off.
Garry
If you have any question, ask. If you want me to run a benchmark for you,
then send me the file, and the instructions, and I'll try to measure the
Centris's speed for you.

Subject: Updating Stuffit Deluxe to version 3.05
A colleague of mine acquired Stuffit Deluxe a while back, and I've been
getting him copies of the upgrades for the product, published in
comp.bin.mac and available on info-mac peers.
However, with the newest 3.05 upgrade, he is having a problem.
Apparently, the 3.04 upgrader only patched the Stuffit Deluxe
application, leaving the Stuffit Engine at a 3.03 level. The 3.05
upgrade kit has an Engine upgrader but this refuses to run, since it
expects the engine to be at 3.04 level.
Has anyone else run into this problem ?

Subject: V32bis and Zmodem
Ok, I know this is a FAQ because I've seen it before. However, I never paid
attention because it relate to me. I just bought a Zoom V32bis modem and
so far I have been able to connect at 14,400 with V42bis compression and
Arq data correction. My problem is that I need to download files from
Unix systems (Text files in hqx format) running ultrix. I am using the
sz program available on sumex to do the transfers. My problem is that I
am getting CRC data errors way to often which is cutting my CPS efficiency
rate down to about 300 CPS. Is this because I have V42bis and /ARQ on
I tried the connection without hardware handshaking (yes I have the correct
cable) and it did work a little bit better. (5-6 errors for a 100Kb file
as opposed to 10 or more CRC errors) But still the errors and retries
kept the efficiency way down. I just got the modem and its settings are
all straight from the factory. I need all the help I can get. I know this
can be done. I have discovered FAQ textfiles on the subject but they were
referring to HST modems. However they were able to get much better
throughput using Zterm and the unix zmodem program sz, which is exactly
what I'm using. Is there some option I need to set when I use sz? I've
tried almost everything. I'd appreciate all the help I could get. Please
send replies to me through Email and I will sumarize to the digest.
Thank you so much.

Hold off on this until I get 1.0b3 onto sumex. b3 is light years better
and is worth waiting for. If you have access to AOL, BIX or GEnie,
Powerless 1.0b3 is already there.

Hi everybody!
I'm new here so hello to all of you.
I had the same problem with a Mac LC one year after I've bought it!
But I hadn't the booting problem.
In my opinion it's a very "mechanical" sound so I think it comes from the
fan; more: during these days it went down and now I hardly can hear it.
Sorry but I haven't any more precise idea!

Subject: Word, RTF & e-mail
A couple of issues ago, jhudson@legent.com suggested using RTF to
exchange info between Macs and PC's using e-mail. Using a floppy, RTF
is very good. However, the RTF format uses trailing spaces if Word
wants to break a line in the RTF file and the paragraph is not ended,
and some mailers strip those spaces. You can end up with concatenated
words everywhere.
